Day 5 of the Malabar Rampage was the toughest yet.

After a relaxed day in Kochi, Day 5 of the Rickshaw Challenge was the toughest of the entire Malabar Rampage, and it wasn’t just hangovers that teams had to contend with! There was a long way to go, with engines being tested in the heat, and we threw in a couple of challenges too. However, when the going got tough, our teams thrived (or, at least, survived) …

Sore Dino

“Did you guys ever get your dinosaur out of the pool last night? Yeah, it’s down here, no idea what happened!”
Luckily, the dinosaur recovered from its hangover to wow local kids throughout the day.

Superman Required

Team Kraken, or rather Superman and Wonder Women, had the most impressive costumes for the day, but their vehicle wasn’t quite in such an agreeable mode. All the better for us, though, as we love nothing more than photos of Superman broken down by the side of the road. To Team 3’s credit, they fixed their rickshaw without having to call up the real supermen (the support team).

The Right Kind of Wrong Turn

The long route wasn’t enough to stop teams from going their own way. And when a wrong turn leads here… who can blame them?

Taxi Drivers

One of the days challenges was to offer taxi rides to locals. Several teams took up the challenge, and locals were only too happy to accept!

Signs

The second challenge of the day was to photograph any funny or unusual signs along the road. This was an easy task, as Indian road signs are often hilarious, weird, and usually downright confusing. Team 17 snapped this rather disconcerting warning, for what we are none the wiser…

Train Track Breakdown

It wasn’t planned, but the Outlaws endured the biggest challenge of all. As they got closer to our destination for the day, Calicut, they noticed one of their vehicles acting up. They tried to carry on, but the rickshaw finally gave up the ghost… while crossing train tracks. Luckily they managed to push the vehicle to safety before any train could turn this crazy anecdote into a sad story.

Eating Together

And at the end of the day, many of the teams joined up for dinner at a restaurant near the hotel. And a fine meal it was too.

Are you crazy enough to come along for the ride? Then join us on the next Rickshaw Challenge. Get a team together and let’s see you at the starting line! ‘There are a lot of ways to ‘discover’ India. As Dave Alefail, Tim Douros, Toni Csermelyi, and 30 other foreigners – including 11 women – from nine different countries found out, one of the best ways to get up close and personal with India, its people, and its culture, is to go the distance in an autorickshaw! These 33 ‘auto adventurers,’ as they called themselves, tooted into the city last Saturday, after completing the sixth annual ‘classic run’ of the ‘Rickshaw Challenge’ that saw them driving 15 decked up autos, all the way from Chennai to Poovar.
It was a fantastic experience, a great way to see the countryside and experience a different side of India,” says Tim, from Boston, Massachusetts, who is on his maiden trip to India. He, along with friends David Mantus and Tim Keutzer, also from Boston, travelled in a custom-made auto they named ‘Big Gulab Jamun’ (a tribute to David’s favourite dessert). “Tim Kuetzer and I have been to India before and have travelled in autos as passengers. But never had we even thought about driving one until we came upon the Rickshaw Challenge. Before we started out, all 33 of us had a three-hour intensive crash course on how to drive an auto, and practised driving one through the chaotic traffic of Chennai,” says David.’
For most participants, this annual trans-Saharan rally is an addiction. But no amount of e xperience seems to equip them for the chaotic traffic encountered in and around Morocco. Most of the drivers don’t leave this leg of the rally without their cars getting scratched or dented.

In the 2006 edition, an Indian stood out for the ease with which he handled the traffic. Humungous vehicles had packed the road and the rally cars could move only by the inch. Unfazed, Aravind Bremanandam (in a 1974 Soviet Lada) wove through the traffic, taking advantage of every small opening.

In the evening, Aravind was the subject of great curiosity. Into a software business that required him to alternate between Budapest and Chennai, Aravind sang the praises of our autorickshaw drivers. “This traffic is nothing compared to what you find in Chennai,” he boasted to the group that hung on to his words.
He promised to give them a feel of driving autorickshaws through the Indian countryside. He kept his word. Later in the year, the “Indian Autorickshaw Challenge”, a Chennai to Kanyakumari rally, was organised.
With painted designs and accessories, the autorickshaws were given a dash of flamboyance (Now, the teams can smarten up their autos by shopping at www.pimpmyshaw.com). The participants themselves went through makeovers. Dressed like dukes, princesses, wizards and what not, they played many roles. The rally lived up to its tagline — “An amazing race for the clinically insane.”
Fifty corporate biggies of different nationalities went sightseeing in Mumbai in autorickshaws yesterday. The joyride was part of an initiative to change visitors’ perception of urban India, which, the hosts said, suffered a setback after the 26/11 terror attacks.
The CEOs and regional heads, all working for DHL’s South Asia-Pacific and Europe regions, were in Mumbai for a company summit during which they took to the road in 16 autorickshaws. “The 26/11 terror attacks kept foreigners away. The company decided to ensure that the perception changed for the better,” explained Franz Festl, general manager, (Trade Lane Management India), DHL Global Forwarding.
Festl said many of the top bosses were visiting India for the first time. “They were thrilled at the sight of a black and yellow three-wheeler operating on CNG or petrol,” said Festl. Christoph Remund, chief executive officer, DHL Lemuir Logistics, who was among the 50 executives, said the experience was exhilarating.
February 15, 2009 – The India branch of DHL Global Forwarding just treated its employees to an unforgettable a day of team-building challenges that involved driving and racing autorickshaws – motorized, three-wheeled vehicles that are an iconic symbol of the Indian subcontinent.
DHL commissioned Chennai Event Management Services (CEMS) to organize this special team-building event. CEMS specializes in large-scale adventure races and endurance rallies, but this particular event is a product from their unique choose-your-own-autorickshaw-adventure service.
The day started early with driving lessons from professional autorickshaw drivers – real experts always make the best teachers! Participants came from all around Europe and South Asia Pacific for this event. Most had never even seen an autorickshaw before, and nobody had ever driven one.
Endurance challenges were offered first to get everybody warmed up. After a great game of autorickshaw tag, things really started to heat up! A special “slow race” really challenged everyone’s driving skills and brought laughs and cheers from all teams.
The final challenge was an extraordinary autorickshaw ballet, in which teams danced around the arena in three clusters of five vehicles each. This unusual spectacle was definitely the highlight of the day.
At the end of the event, prizes were given for the top-scoring teams. Everyone had a fantastic time, and the participants agreed the event was one of the most unique experiences they had ever had.
CEMS is responsible for organizing events like the annual Rickshaw Challenges in India and the Bus Number 7 rally that goes from Central Europe to Africa. This custom DHL team-building day represents a unique CEMS service that lets clients dream up their own autorickshaw-related events.
