In the latest installment of our Deccan Odyssey 2017 recap, Princely tells us all about the adventures of the Rickshaw Challenge on Day 4 (Belgaum to Kolhapur), Day 5 (Kolhapur to Pune), and Day 6 (Pune to Aurangabad). The participants explored Maharashtra, challenged themselves by driving even longer distances in their rickshaws, and took some great photos! Here’s Princely’s account:

Day 4 Belgaum to Kolhapur

The fourth day of Deccan odyssey 2017 started from Belgaum. It had been a long night for many of the participants and when the teams came to the Lobby they were sharing the stories with me. Michel, one of the Bhaji boys (Team 2) was the earliest for the breakfast. The rest of the teams arrived at 8 am. for briefing. Being a short day of just 120 km, Team 3 the French connection decided to take a detour to a water falls recommended in the day sheet. Before 8.30 am. all the teams left for the day from the base hotel. The tempo traveler in which I was travelling took just 3 hours to reach the base hotel in Kolhapur. The first team to arrive in Kolhapur was team 2. They checked in first and went to look around the town. By 5 PM all the teams checked in the hotel and the uneventful day came to end. In the night teams searched for a good pub and the recommended bar in the day sheet was selected to wind off.

Day 5 Kolhapur to Pune

As per the day plan this was the longest day in the whole trip. The base hotel on the day was located in the outer suburbs on the Bombay bypass from Pune. Considering that in mind I briefed them at 8 AM at the hotel and explained them what is it going to be to find the hotel. Everything went smoothly and the teams arrived at the base hotel around 5.30 PM. The teams had no outing that day and all of them went to bed early. Me and support crew had tough time finding a hotel nearby and eventually landed up in a hotel which was 3 KM away from the base hotel.

Day 6 Pune to Aurangabad

All the teams were early to the breakfast and briefing was at 8 AM sharp. Ferrying out of Pune was a challenge that day and I gave them a rough idea how the roads were going to be. There was no evidence of rain on the road from the previous as the sun was bright and shining on Pune that morning. The Support crew and I had breakfast and started at 8.30 AM. For me to get out of Pune traffic took about 3 hours. When it was around 1 PM, I received a message from Team 2 that their ‘engine died’. The support crew got to them just minutes later. Eventfully we found out that the team had lost the fuel tank and covered it with tape. The act had choked the fuel flow and caused the problem. It was really a long day and teams were really tiered when they reached the base hotel. The base hotel had a lovely bar and the teams got up there and had fun.
The Deccan Odyssey Rickshaw Challenge 2017 has begun! Teams met in Panaji, Goa, for a couple of days’ rickshaw training, before setting off to explore some of the most interesting places in India! The first stop was Belgaum, in Karnataka, and after a week of excitement the rally will end in Mumbai. Here’s the story of the first few days, courtesy of organizer Princely:

Deccan Odyssey 2017: Day 1

Princely giving teams the lowdown on the Rickshaw Challenge

Exactly at 9.30 at the clock the first team Flintstones came to the reception and asked for the Rickshaw Challenge organizers. It did not take much time to finish the registration, once the team 4 came arrived at the hotel we winded up and moved to the next segment: briefing. I gave them all a warm welcome and briefed them about what we expect on the rickshaw challenge. Next we moved on to Practice. As the monsoon had started in Goa, rains filled the low spots of the practice ground and it added a special challenge. I gave them a good introduction of the vehicle and asked them to start the practice. All the teams picked it up really fast and they were all fluent in just an hour time. Then we practiced couple of drills and bang, time came for them to hit the road. The first challenge is to find the hotel and on the way they had to fill the petrol: one by one, all the teams successfully arrived back at the hotel.

Deccan Odyssey 2017: Day 2

I dropped myself at the base hotel at around 10 am. At that time, a couple of teams were having their breakfast and getting ready for the mini challenge. By 11 am everyone started to explore old Goa, as mentioned in the mini challenge. All the teams had no issues except team 1. The vehicle was starting and then stopping within a short distance. James (the younger Flintstone) has a lot of interest in mechanics so tried himself for some time, but eventually he had to call me for help. The Chennai Garage team reached them and rectified the fault in the fuel supply from tank. All ended well and teams went to hit the bed early, to be fit for the first day on road.

Deccan Odyssey 2017: Day 3

This was the most exciting day for the teams, as it is the first day they are travelling to another town. The teams were briefed at 8 am. Immediately after that we flagged them all off. The first incident on road was a small accident between team 1 and a two wheeler. I was on the scene before they could call me. The two wheeler person was behaving cool. The only damage to the vehicle was the head light dome. Only a few minutes later, I saw the guy taking a selfie with the teams! Debora (the elder sibling of the cousins) was totally awestruck to see what was happening. She said that if that would have happened in England, it would have been a serious issue. Immediately came a message that Team French connections were having a break down, just 7 km ahead of us. Minutes later I received a call from them informing me that they had just ran out of fuel. Even before we could reach them they were helped by the locals and got back on driving. When we caught up with them, their kick start was broken and it was just a 5 minutes work by the CG mechanics.

The funniest of all activity on that day was the petrol station mentioned in the petrol challenge was closed and all of them had to buy petrol from retails in bottle. Then again I got a call from Team Bhaji Boys with the same issue. It was also sorted out by the help given by team 3, who reached them before the service guys could get them. One by one the teams started reaching the base hotel at Belgaum. Belgaum was colorful as the town is preparing for the Ramzan. In the night teams sat for beers and they were sharing the lighter side of things on road. The most amazing stories were again from team 1, as they had to wait for 45 minutes in police station, as the cops wanted them to have tea. Team 2 got beers from out of who knows where: they felt like beer angel is following them. With that note I will end this first edition of Deccan odyssey 2017. See you at Aurangabad.

We learn about the states visited by the Deccan Odyssey Rickshaw Challenge.

The Deccan Odyssey Rickshaw Challenge kicks off on June 10th, with training in Panaji. Participants will explore Goa, Karnataka, spending most time in Maharashtra. When the event finishes on 18th June in Mumbai, teams will have seen some amazing places, eaten incredible food, and had a very good times. Here are the states visited by the Deccan Odyssey 2017!

Goa

The Union territory of Goa is the smallest state in India, but one of the most popular to visit, and it’s immediately easy to see why. The coast is lined with golden sands, home to beaches of every variety: secret coves and luxury resorts, hippy hangouts and party paradise. But Goa isn’t just beaches. The territory has a rich history, due to centuries of trade and colonialism, and the state is a mix of Islamic, Hindu, and Portuguese elements, and more.

Nowhere is the incredible cultural history more evident than Goa’s incredible cuisine. Eating some of best food in India is a great way to start the Deccan Odyssey Rickshaw Challenge: with freshly-caught seafood and fiery spices, what more can you want? Colonial history is also visible in the architecture and atmospheric streets. Panaji’s latin quarter, lined with cobbled streets and colourful buildings, is like nowhere else in India. If amazing buildings aren’t your thing, head inland to Goa’s lush countryside.

Karnataka

The Deccan Odyssey Rickshaw Challenge doesn’t visit Karnataka for long, only spending one night there: in the city of Belagavi. Karnataka is fascinating and large, though, extending hundreds of miles inland, dominating much of Southern India. Places of note include Hampi, which was once the second largest city of earth, and Mysuru, the grand palace city. Karnataka also include modern cities like Bangalore and Mangalore, sites of religious pilgrimage like Murudeshwara, and beautiful countryside of rolling hills, jungles, and national parks.

Maharashtra

Maharashtra is where teams on the Deccan Odyssey will spend most of their time, but they will only scratch the surface of India’s third-largest, and second-most-populous state. Luckily, there’s quite the surface: including Mumbai, one of the greatest cities on earth. There’s also Pune, the ninth largest city in India, and Nagpur, not far behind. For city life, there aren’t many places better than Maharashtra. However, there’s so much more to the state than urban living.

There is supreme nature: luscious vineyards, myriad beaches, and incredible natural park filled with exotic wildlife. And there’s an incredible amount of history. Look out for religious monuments, colonial relics, and best of all, the astonishing caves of Ellora and Ajanta, which the Deccan Odyssey will visit. You can even find a mini Taj Mahal, pictured above, in Aurangabad.

Are you crazy enough to come along for the ride? Then join us on the next Rickshaw Challenge. Get a team together and let’s see you at the starting line!
India’s most populous city, and the tenth largest city in the world, Mumbai is an amazing place. It’s home to the best and worst of India, the richest grandeur and the biggest slums. It’s relentlessly modern, at the very forefront of Indian business an technology, yet you can find history around every corner. It’s also the final destination of the upcoming Deccan Odyssey Rickshaw Challenge. Here are some of the reasons that we love Mumbai.

Mumbai Is Big

Mumbai is certainly big, packed with skyscrapers and sprawling for miles. However, it’s only the fourth biggest city in India by area: the real craziness of Mumbai is thanks to its density. It’s one of the most densely populated cities on earth, with over 12 million inhabitants fitting in an area of only 600 square kilometers. For perspective, this is the smallest area of any of the world’s top 25 cities by population. Being so tightly packed gives Mumbai an irresistible energy, which must be experienced to be believed.

Mumbai is Old

Despite being very much a modern city, Mumbai has a history that rivals anywhere else in India. It’s thought that the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age and several millennia of recorded history provide myriad tales of the various empires and dynasties that made the city their home. Mumbai had been known by many names, from Kakamuchee and Galajunkja in ancient times to its colonial title Bombai. Though this is likely merely a colonial corruption of the local name, in 1995 the city was officially renamed Mumbai, is honour of the goddess Mumbadevi, the city’s patron saint. Historical architecture can be found everywhere in the city, with perhaps the most prominent example being the Gateway of India, pictured above, built by the British in the early 20th century.

Mumbai is Beautiful

Mumbai contains many beautiful sights, both architectural and natural. There are glorious temples, and grand colonial relics, like the High Court, pictured above. When it comes to nature, there is nowhere better than Sanjay Gandhi National Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world, which attracts over 2 million tourists a year. Here you can find wonderful scenery, wild animals, and also the ancient Kanheri Caves, with carvings dating back thousands of years.

Mumbai is Fun

If it’s fun that you’re looking for, and on the Rickshaw Challenge it usually is, then Mumbai is the right place. Of the major cities, Mumbai is number 1 for nightlife, with unlimited options for however you want to spend your evening. It’s also home to a thriving cultural and art scene, in addition to the excitement of traditional festivals.

Mumbai is the home of Bollywood

India’s Hindi film industry produces hundreds of films and sells billions of tickets annually, and is of course based in Mumbai. Bollywood adds yet another layer of excitement to the city, with hopeful young actors arriving in droves, film crews often stationed on the cities streets, and tours offering fans the chance to see the mansions of the most famous stars.

Mumbai has Incredible Beaches

Positioned right beside the Arabian Sea, it’s very easy to escape city life and enjoy the sand, sea, and sun. There are numerous famous beaches, including Gorai Beach, Aksa Beach, and, pictured above, Juhu Beach. One reason we love Mumbai is the chance to relax on the shore, maybe play a game of beach cricket, and admire the beautiful sunset.

Mumbai is a Great Place to Shop

There are department stores and luxury shops galore, but we love Mumbai for its amazing street markets. From Colaba Causeway to Linking Road, Fashion Street to Dadar Flower Market, not forgetting Chor and Zaveri Bazaars, there’s something for everyone. Whether you wants spices or silk, a new wardrobe or clothes to go in it, Mumbai street markets offer dazzling variety and, if you’re willing to bargain, great value.

Mumbai Has Delicious Food (Everywhere)

As a major global city, Mumbai is home to many fine dining establishments, but the true joy of eating in Mumbai is testing out the city’s famous, and ubiquitous, street food. Unlike elsewhere in India, street food in Mumbai is popular with all of society, not merely those looking to save their money. Market stalls offer food for every palate, but the most popular dish is Maharashtrian specialty vada pav, a kind of deep-friend potato patty.

If you’re in Mumbai, there’s nothing like a bit of shopping. The best street markets in Mumbai are where you can get the authentic produce for the cheapest prices in the coolest settings!
Get ready to bargain. Street shopping in India can be an exhilarating experience, with an overwhelming selection of goods on offer at prices you won’t believe. Here’s our guide to the best street markets in Mumbai:

Colaba Causeway

Colaba is a must-see destination for tourists in Mumbai, located close to the Gateway to India, and the market at Colaba Causeway is always packed. The buzz and activity can make it seem like a festival, so it’s worth a visit even if you don’t plan to shop. Keeping your wallet in your pocket would be a waste though, as there’s someone for everyone. The variety on offer means it’s worth braving the crowds.

Crawford Market

Visiting Crawford market is recommended for lovers of history as well as shopping: located in the fort district, it’s found in a colonial building completed in 1869. The interior stone fountains were designed by the father of Rudyard Kipling! Crawford Market is where to go for wholesale fruit and vegetables, which line aisles of incredible colour. There’s much else besides and you could get lost in the maze, and could end up in the section dedicated to a surprising variety of pets…

Chor Bazaar

The “thieves market”, Chor Bazaar, is one of India’s largest flea markets. Travellers have long said that if you get something stolen in Mumbai, you can buy it back here. However, the selection of second hand and antique goods is very impressive. Many say that the name was originally Shor, meaning noisy, and as an old-fashioned bazaar it lives up to that reputation. Be prepared to bargain!

Zaveri Bazaar

Zaveri Bazaar is a jewellery lovers paradise, with more than half India’s gold trading believed to originate in this market. There are all kinds of gems, with both modern and traditional Indian designs. With prices far lower than abroad, it’d be a shame not to bring something home. The least you can get is a delicious snack from one of the food stalls, like some of the freshly cooked batata vada pictured above.

Dadar Flower Market

Dadar Flower market — also known as “Phool Gully”, meaning flower street — is a flower lover’s dream, whatever your favourite variety. It’s a wholesale market, so is generally liveliest early in the morning. While your purchase might not survive the journey home, the prices are so cheap you might as well surprise your favourite travel companion with a bouquet!

Fashion Street

On Fashion Street in South Mumbai you can find unbelievable 385 clothing shops in one lane. No matter what your style or price range, there’s something to catch your eye. While there are many cheap reproductions of designer labels, if you look hard enough you’ll find authentic quality too. Try some haggling and you could find yourself a real bargain.

Linking Road

Linking Road, in the fancy suburb of Bandra, attracts locals from all over the city. There are stalls selling clothes from dirt-cheap basics to boutique fashion, of domestic and foreign styles. There are stalls flogging shoes, accessories, handbags, and much more. If you get tired of bargain hunting, there are food vendors galore.
These are just a selection of the best street markets in Mumbai and there are plenty more if you’re looking for something specific. For cloths and silk go to Mangaldas market in Kalbadevi, for electronics there’s nowhere better than Lamington Market, and if you want to buy some cheap literature try the book stalls by Flora Fountain.

If you dream of seeing Mumbai, for its street markets and its many other attractions, there’s no better way of exploring southern India than by Rickshaw Challenge. The Deccan Odyssey takes place in June 2017, beginning in Goa and ending up in Mumbai one week later. The Mumbai Xpress, two months later, is a two week adventure from Mumbai to Chennai. You’ll see the sights, party with fellow racers, and experience the authentic India… all of it on a tuk tuk!

The History of the Caves

As with many of India’s most fascinating monuments, the beginnings of the Elephanta Caves are shrouded in mystery. The sculptures one finds there are so intricate and impressive that locals claim they cannot be not man-made. Historians aren’t certain from when they date, but suspect work began around one and a half millennia ago. Until the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, the largest cave was an important spot for Hindu worship, while smaller caves were also dedicated to Buddhism. While the caves were neglected during European colonialism, in recent decades their status as a UNESCO World Heritage site has ensured renovation and increased protection.

What is Special about the Caves?

The cave complex at Elephanta contains some of the subcontinent’s most impressive rock carving. The Portuguese named the complex “Elephanta” after a sculpture of an elephant previously standing guard outside the caves (it can now be found at Mumbai’s Jijamata Udyaan zoo). The caves are located on Elephanta Island, sometimes known as Gharapuri, meaning “City of Caves”. The island is ten kilometres to the east of Mumbai Harbour.

The caves contain many temples, with the five largest devoted to Hinduism. The largest of these, the Shiva Cave, is supported by many carved pillars, and each wall features stunning carvings of religious scenes. It also contains the the true masterpiece of the complex: an awe-inspiring sculpture of a three-headed Shiva, known as Trimurti (“the one with three heads”).

How to get to the Caves

The ferry from Mumbai takes one hour, and tickets are sold at the Gateway to India, the most recognisable monument in the city! In theory, there’s a clearly visible booth selling tickets just to the left of the monument. However, in India theory doesn’t always apply: it can be hard to find, with limited signage. It’s better to listen for the ticket seller loudly shouting “Elephanta”! Make sure you get on the official ferry, and not some sightseeing tour. Return tickets should be around $3 but it’s worth paying a (very cheap) fee to get space on the upper deck: it’s quieter and there are great views.

Pro-Tips for Visiting Elephanta Caves

Here’s the most important thing you need to know before visiting Elephanta Caves: there are monkeys everywhere. The island is packed with these pesky creatures, and though they are used to crowds that doesn’t mean they’re always friendly. They’ll try to steal your food, so it’s a good idea not to bother packing any: there’s plenty to buy on the island.
One thing you should do is stop to enjoy the view back over Mumbai’s skyline: that alone can make the trip worthwhile. It’s also best to bring decent shoes, it’s a little walk up the hill to the caves from where the ferry drops you off. Finally, the caves are closed on Mondays but that won’t stop them selling you a ferry ticket to the Island so watch out!

Day One:

Every member of the Fantastic Five has arrived in time for registration at the River View Hall in the Crown Hotel located in Goa, Panaji. The Kameraki Team from Japan arrived at the same time the organizers did and Team Packman decided that being early was the way to go (they arrived one day in advance.) We Don’t Give A Tuk arrived just in the nick of time with a severe case of Jet Lag and last but not least, the Wicked Vikings and Screw Loose Racing both had a smashing party in the casino the night before. During the briefing, Mother Nature decided that it was time to make things interesting with a case of heavy raining. However, nothing could ruin the lively atmosphere of the room after the briefing: the groups chirped away with each other. Luck was on our side during the Practice routes, too; the rain had stopped and the teams could practise in peace. We Don’t Give A Tuk ran into some difficulties, but the other teams got comfy with the roads quickly (the Packman Team was so self-assured that they only practised for an hour or so.)

Day Two:

At 11 AM, the teams met up with the organizers, with each team already set to start on the adventure. The mini-challenge started from Old Goa and went on until the Basilica. The organizers caught up with the Kameraki Team and took some photos. Then, everyone returned to the hotel for a great game of Water Polo in the blissfully cool swimming pool.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-13366 size-medium" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/PIC_9360-400x300.jpg" alt="Hello, Kameraki!

Day Three:

The Fantastic Five kept the organizers waiting a bit: instead of 7 AM, they showed up at 7.30 AM. Todd, from Team Packman showed up at the reception in his wonderful costume and told the organizers that some of the contenders went out the night before and had a huge party. Around 8 o’clock, the other contestants arrived, most of them very tired (ahem, hung over) from the previous night. Even though nobody was on their A-game, they soon livened up by the thought of their upcoming magical challenge. By 9 AM, everyone was on the road. During the drive around Belgaum, the Wicked Vikings and Screw Loose Racing got into a bit of a break-down-pickle, but all was fixed thanks to the support crew. Everyone was completely beat by the end of the day.

On the road again!

Day Four:

We Don’t Give A Tuk got very creative this time; they went with an Arabian Nights theme to give the kickoff of the race a truly uplifting vibe. One of the members of Team Kameraki informed the organizers that they will only be able to start after 10 AM. In the end, all members of the Fantastic Five arrived on time in Kolapur, with all of their challenges met to their best effort. It was a wonderful day.

Tired smiles from everyone

The Deccan Odyssey is on the horizon, starting in just a month and a bit, so to hype things up a bit we want to introduce the Deccan Plateau to you. This large stretch of land, taking up most of central and south India, lies between the Western and Eastern Ghats, the Nilgiri Hills in the south and Aravalli and Chota Nagpur hills in the north.

The plateau is vast, so of course the Rickshaw Challenge Deccan Odyssey won’t go through all of these places, but we do touch on them in the India’s Cup and the Rickshaw Challenge Mumbai Xpress as well!

The Ajanta and Ellora Caves

Both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Ajanta and Ellora Caves are some of India’s most remarkable monuments. Housing intricate friezes, frescoes and rock-carved temples dedicated to Buddhist, Hindu and Jain faiths, the Ajanta caves date back to the 2nd century BC to 6th century AD; it has 29 caves and is set in the stunning backdrop of a crescent shaped gorge. Ellora on the otherhand has 34 caves, with grand halls, monasteries and temples inside. These caves are slightly younger than Ajanta, dating back to 5th to 11th centuries AD. This is definitely going to be one of the biggest highlights on the upcoming Deccan Odyssey!
The Mini-Taj Mahal of Aurangabad

Aurangabad might be used as a gateway to visit the famous Ajanta and Ellora caves, but this city, named after the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, has plenty to offer.
The city has its own set of Buddhist cave temples dating back to the 6th and 7th century AD, but perhaps its most amazing is Bibi ka Maqbara, a monument that bears a striking resemblance to the Taj Mahal. This white marbled building was built in the 17th century by Azam Shah for his mother, and is pretty spectacular, especially if you won’t get the time to go all the way up to Agra, this makes a pretty good consolation prize.

The Ruins of Hampi

At the centre of the Deccan Plateau in Karnataka, the enigmatic city of Hampi spreads out for miles on end, with ancient temples and palaces dotted between rocky boulders. This is another UNESCO Site that the Deccan Plateau can claim for itself. Hampi used to be the capital of the Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagar, which saw its hayday in the 14th to 16th centuries. Even today, Hampi is still a spectacular site for visitors. Hampi is one of our highlights on the India’s Cup Ambassador rally!

The Fort of Belgaum

The town of Belgaum dates back to the 12th century AD to the Ratta dynasty. Belgaum was renowned for its trade in diamonds and wood in the past, but today it’s still a commercial hub of Karnataka state. Main features of this town, which is one of our stops on the Deccan Odyssey, is Belgaum Fort, built in the 13th century by Jaya Raya. The fort is perhaps most famed for Gandhi having been imprisoned by the British here. You’ll also find several religious monuments dedicated to Hindu, Jain and Muslim faiths inside as well.

The Qutb Shahi Monuments of Hyderabad

Hyderabad is one of the most interesting cities in the Deccan Plateau. It has a Muslim majority and almost split to join Pakistan, had it not been in its geographic location in the south of India. Main sites include the famous Charminar at the centre of the old town, and Golconda Fort on the outskirts. Golconda is India’s second largest fort and a spectacular site in itself. You’ll also find the spectacular Qutb Shahi Tombs close to Golconda as well.

The Tea Fields of Ooty

Up in the Nilgiri Hills, the town of Ooty is known for its tea gardens and factories. A drive through the hills offers stunning views of bright green tea fields stretching down the mountainside. The tight hairpin bends would be a challenge by rickshaw, which is why we try to get the Ambassadors to tackle this route on the India’s Cup.

The Palaces of Mysore

Famed for its palaces, Mysore is a city in South India that can be thought of as a jewel in its own right. Mysore Palace is said to be India’s second most visited site after the Taj Mahal, and is a bright and gaudy example of indo-saracenic style. The palace echoes back to the era of the Maharajas, with its interior resembling a jewel more than a palace.

Pune’s Legacy

Pune was once the seat of the Maratha Empire and grew under the ruler Shicajo and under the British Raj. The city today is India’s eighth largest metropolis in India and the state’s second largest city after Mumbai.
There is plenty to see and do in Pune, like the 8th century rock-cut Pataleshwar Cave Temple or the Aga Kahn Palace. Perhaps the most famous monument is the Red Palace, built in the 17th century and a bright red structure in the city.

The Gardens of Bangalore

Bangalore, also known as the Garden City, is Karnataka’s capital and also the IT hub of India. It’s a city that had a complex history from the Vijayanagar Empire to the Mughals, the Wodeyars and to British India. Bangalore’s main attractions are the Vidhan Soudha – the Legislative Chambers of the state government – and Lal Bagh, 240 acres of gardens!

Intricately carved into the hillside in the middle of the Indian countryside in northern Maharastra, the Ajanta and Ellora Caves are some of India’s greatest architectural wonders and a must see for anyone traveling the area around Mumbai.
They have both been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and quite rightly so, especially when the caves at Ellora date back to 6th and 11th centuries AD, and the Ajanta caves even more so, having been constructed between the 2nd century BC and 6th century AD.
The caves are vast, and merit an entire day’s visit, which is why our Deccan Odyssey run on the Rickshaw Challenge, which is currently taking place, spends a rest day in Aurangabad.
If you’re going to take a break from tooting your rickshaw, you might as well see something spectacular – and these caves won’t disappoint.

Ancient Ajanta

Ajanta is the older cave system, with the current caves dating as far back as the 2nd century BC. There are 29 caves cut into the volcanic rock found around the Deccan Plateau.
These caves are known for their carvings and sculptures depicting the life of Buddha. The artwork found in these ancient caves are said to mark the birth of classical Indian art.
But despite the artistic wonders of these caves, which once functioned as a monastic complex, they were abandoned in the 7th century AD due to Ellora’s increasing popularity.
The caves faded out of memory, until a British tiger-hunting party “rediscovered” Ajanta in the early 19th century. Now the caves house some of the best examples of Buddhist art.
It’s not just the art that make these caves worth the visit, but the horse-shoe bend of rock rising over 75m in height above the Waghora stream provides a spectacular sight.

Multi-religious Ellora

The Ellora Caves were all about tolerance and inclusiveness. With Buddhist, Hindu and Jain sanctuaries, people could practice the three religions side-by-side, which makes these caves a unique place in the Indian sub-continent.
There are over 600 monuments on the site, spread between 34 rock-cut monasteries and temples set into the walls of the high basalt cliff.
Like Ajanta, the caves are a masterpiece in themselves, both in architecture and artistic calibre, but they also illustrate a tolerant spirit that was characteristic in ancient India.
Out of the 34 structures, 12 were Buddhist, 17 Hindu and 5 Jain, all of which were vertically excavated out of stone. These caves are also rich in art and habitation space along side their temples.

Getting there

The best way to visit is to join us on the Rickshaw Challenge for the Deccan Odyssey, but if you can’t wait till next year, or if you want to make a detour after taking part in our other runs, you can always do it yourself.
You can fly into Aurangabad, which is located about 15km from the caves. If you want the true Indian experience that is not on a rickshaw, then you can always take the train.
There are regular trains running from Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi and so on, so it’s not hard to make it to Aurangabad. Also, there are regular bus services to the caves from the city, so it’s easy to do.

‘Goa to Bombay. Seven Teams. Eight Days. Monsoon Rains. It’s the Rickshaw Challenge!
To learn how to drive our new ride we were led to the local parade grounds or what some would call a swamp. The monsoon rains had begun and we were soaked, mud crept through our toes and the smell of compost soon overwhelmed the senses. The fun had begun!
It was here that we realized that driving a rickshaw is not nearly as easy as one would expect. A rickshaw is a bit like a lawnmower, you must pull up on the starter to start the engine. From there you use hand gears to shift and accelerate and a foot pedal to brake. It takes some getting used to but by the second day, it feels like you’ve been driving for years.
Driving in India, nothing can prepare you for the sheer terror and exhilaration one feels when passing an ox-cart while driving in oncoming traffic down a 25% incline. Particularly when you’re staring right into the face of a shipping container on wheels.
India is a crazy country, and only someone mentally insane would decide to travel 1,043 km from Goa to Bombay in a Rickshaw. But we did it, and it was fantastic.’
