So, what happens when you have a dream that you want to follow, no matter the consequences? This Jaipur girl created a Home for Artists to help others like herself.

If you’re looking for a bit of inspiration, look no further than Jaipur, India, where Nimisha Verma decided to go against her parents wishes and become an artist. She was only nineteen when she left her parents’ house with her brother Sudhanshu, and in only a year, she managed to pull off creating a safe haven for artists like herself and her brother.

Logo. Photo Credit: Homeforartists Instagram

In the interview with ScoopWhoop, she said the following: “When I left my parents house to follow my dreams last year with my brother Sudhanshu, we struggled a lot. For four days we wandered in search of a roof over our head and a stable place to sleep at night. Those four days I can never forget in my entire life. I promised myself I’ll create a place which any artist with hope could call a home. A home for all the artists so they aren’t afraid of nowhere to be when they wish to escape and make art.”

<img decoding="async" class=" wp-image-14328" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/4858921901_41280d511b_z.jpg" alt="Get Creative!
This organisation aims to provide a place where the community of artists can feel safe and just focus on creating – after all, that is what art is all about, isn’t it? There is a daily kitchen schedule: breakfast at nine in the morning, fruits and salad at 1 pm – for lunch, you can “beg, borrow or eat,” and dinner is at 9.30 pm. There is no lunch, because there are a lot of financials to take into consideration, but residents are welcome to go out and buy food.

Home for Artists welcomes travellers, too: if you’re an artists participating in the Rickshaw Challenge, you may want to consider joining this inspiring place for a couple of days – free of charge. Residents who have lived there for a longer period of time have to pay rent, because they have a lot of expenses. As Nimisha described, “We meditate in the morning, then cook, draw, write and sleep together. There are some nights when we don’t sleep at all and keep reading books or discuss some artworks and poetry. Everyday we welcome new artists and travelers to stay with us who share their story and experiences.” In other words, it’s an open, friendly community where you can take time to develop your art.

Nimisha has big plans for the future: she wants to create a university that isn’t constrained to the whims of the education system. As she said, “they won’t come for a degree but to live art with similar creative souls.” She added, “They will learn, teach and stay at the same place surrounded by nature and peaceful environment.”

One thing is for sure: this girl really proved that one cannot go wrong with following their dreams – the only thing you need is determination.

-Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you participated in the Rickshaw Challenge! Have you ever embarked on a similar adventure?

Team Dancing Double Chef: Kristina and Christopher

My name is Kristina Cheffins and I am Head of Performing Arts at Doha British School in Qatar. I have done a lot of travelling, often including some form of charity work along the way, but I have never done anything quite this crazy before – it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I was raising funds for Dementia UK, because my Dad is in a home with dementia and my partner in crime was raising funds for Scottish Autism, as his nephew has autism. We also donated our rickshaw deposit to Round Table India as we were so impressed with the work they are doing to help improve education.

-What did India teach you?

To keep smiling no matter what. The one thing I took away with me more than anything was the nature of the people. They were so welcoming and genuinely interested in what we were doing. People will do anything to help you out. Good karma goes a long way. I will try to be more patient in future and try to do something good for a stranger every day like they did for us.

-What was your most “only in India” experience?

It has to be something to do with the driving, and the lack of logic (ha-ha,) but somehow it works. Also, driving down the wrong side of the road with your lights on to let people know you’re coming: at one point, we missed a turn off on a highway so we did exactly that. Did a U-turn and drove back down the hard shoulder.

The Magical Chariot

-What was the first thing that crossed your mind when you saw your Rickshaw?

What was I thinking? I can’t drive that 2000km!!!

There were many, but driving the wrong way down the highway because we missed the turning has to be up there. Also, driving up and down the mountains in the thickest fog, unable to see past the end of our noses. Another thing: the monsoon weather has to be up there too, especially when you only have a manual windscreen wiper (ha-ha.)

-How many breakdowns did you have (and how did you manage to solve the problem) ?

We actually didn’t have that many, I am not sure how. But there was one day near the beginning where everytime you went down the gears the rickshaw stalled. We just kept restarting and trying to maintain a steady speed in 3rd gear until we found the hotel but it was hard in a city. Other than running out of petrol a couple of times, we did ok. We lost a few fuel caps too, but in India everyone comes to your rescue very quickly.

I really enjoyed dahl. Before visiting India, I didn’t really eat Indian food, as I am not a fan of spicy dishes, but I eally enjoyed the food I had. I had a few paneer based curries which were nice.

Alas, the Mumbai Xpress has ended, new friends were made, amazing places were visited and great parties held – we loved every second of it. But what happened during the last couple of days? Our Travel Scientist in the field, Princely recounted events as they occurred.

Day 9: Panaji to Murudeshwara
August 15 is the Indian Independence day. The Goa Round Table had arranged a school visit that morning, which was planned well in time and Teams 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 took part in it. By the time we arrived the flag was hoisted in the premises and the kids were performing the skits prepared by them. The Teams enjoyed the show and distributed the presents brought down by them and the gifts from Round Table. We then got back on the road before 10 am. When I crossed Karwar and was approaching Batkal I met Team 8, which had some technical snare with their vehicle. I checked the problematic vehicle: a suspected bottle lid drop in the fuel tank was detected and the Chennai Garage team swapped a fuel tank. Team 8 was very frustrated, so I called on the support team and we moved from the place. The problem was rectified that day and after that the team had no issues.
Throughout the route, two big groups formed out of the numerous teams. One group was the six teams from 001 to 006 and the second one consisted of three teams, from 007, 008 and 009. One part was totally under the control of support team and staffs, and the other group had their own plan, did their repairs by themselves and filmed all the hidden treasures of India.

Roads Untravelled? Photo Credit: Magnus Heinmets

I reached Murudeshwara at around 2.30 pm and the first team arrived there at 4.30 pm. Some of the teams visited the beach of Agoda which is suggested in our day plan. The big Shiva statue and the tower excited them all. They all mentioned the beautiful view of the base hotel. Then, we sat in for beers at Naveen residency and as usual, a lot of Indian non-logical stories were told.

Day 10: Murudeshwara to Mangalore
Driving in the state of Maharastra has made the participants experts in driving. They had gotten through some tough terrains, challenged by heavy rains and bad roads. On the bright side, this has made them all experts in handling any situation. The drive from Murudeshwara was an easy task for everyone – it was pretty much a good road.

Rickshaw Line Up

Udupi was the stop in-between to complete a challenge, so most of the teams visited the place and some even tried the food served in the temple. The day ended rather quickly and the next day drive was discussed well in advance during debriefing. Teams were aware that there was going to be a school visit the next day morning and a 250-odd km drive to Mysore.

Day 11: Mangalore to Mysore
The Mangalore school visit was reduced to 4 teams and rest of the teams wanted to leave early as the day was going to be one of the longest in the journey. Team 1, Team 2, Team 3 and Team 6 came for the visit. After the school visit, the teams were flagged off by the Round Table staff. On the drive, I saw Team 9 was attending a fault with a local mechanic and when I stopped the vehicle for them they showed thumbs up and they were fast to get back on road. Through Facebook, I learnt that Team 8 had some silencer issues and that they also took care of it themselves. The long day turned out to be an uneventful day and all the teams were well on time and enjoyed the view of Palace which is lit for the evenings.
Teams enjoyed the Opium bar in the base hotel and it was a rocking session for them.
Day 12: Mysore to Banglore
Mysore morning started with a school visit and we went there with all the teams. Every one had a marvelous time with the children at school. Many Participants danced and asked the kids to repeat the movements. The kids did few performances and Team 2 and Team 6 danced to a salsa tune and the kids enjoyed the small gesture showed by our Participants.
Even though the distance of the route was not a concern, the day’s drive had a tough end to it: navigating in the Banglore traffic and finding the base hotel proved to be difficult. Eventually, all the teams made it in style, except for Team 3 which need some navigation and sign skills to get back to the hotel.
Team 2 participant, Hector Gabriel from Puerto Rico had his birthday, so he threw a party in the base hotel’s new pub. It must have been a wild party, because some of the team members could not even get up from bed the next day.
Day 13: Banglore to Vellore
In the morning, there was another school visit. As a resut of the previous night’s party, Team 1 and Team 6 skipped the school visit. Team 7 to 9 stayed in a different hotel and started early. They also informed me that they are would not be coming to the school. Finally, we landed at the school with 4 teams. The school had a terrific band and no participant will forget the warm welcome we got, teams didn’t want to leave the school premises!
Apart from the school visit, there were no calls for repair and to my knowledge, no breakdowns happened. It was a smooth drive to vellore. All teams wanted to go and rest early, as the previous days still had an impact on them. The teams had mixed feeling about the last day and most of them were sad that the fun rally is coming to end.

Seashells on the Seashore

Day 14: Vellore to Chennai
The last and the final day started with a project visit and ended in a school visit.
As per plan, no team was left behind on the last stretch. The school and the atmosphere the students created gave a fitting farewell to the great Mumbai Xpress rickshaw rally. The last big party was held in the Elements Hostel in Chennai and the great rally had come to an end. 14 days and countless memories took the participants in strides and the effect will stay with them for some more days to come.
See you on the next adventure!

Finally, the updates are in! Our wonderful bunch of participants have kicked off the Mumbai Xpress 2016 with high spirits… Here are the happenings of the first three days, as told by our field ninja, Princely.

Day 1

Mumbai Xpress is always an exciting, more adventurous and scenic rally in Rickshaw Challenge calendar. However, Mumbai bureaucracy and guardians of law are tough nuts to crack. From the preparation to assembling of the vehicles for the line up to practice, there were many difficulties, but all of them vanished from the organizers’ minds when they saw the enthusiastic participants. Registration started well on time and there were two teams, Team 4 and Team 6 that came on time. Rest of the teams came in slowly one by one. We had fixed the briefing at 11.30 am. Team 5, Team Jelly joined us after briefing due to their flight schedule.
The teams had 45 minutes of Briefing, which was done by Aravind, lead scientist of the Travel Scientists. The short briefing came to an end and the teams had a Q&A session. The two rules which need to be followed in India are a) No logic and b) Smile on face. The teams were asked to join for the practice at 2 pm in the designated college ground.
Team 7, Beach Please is made up of three ladies from Estonia – they took a tuk tuk and went to a far off place which supposedly shares the same name as this college. Finally when they found the right place, the practice session has been going on for at least an hour. Few arguments with the tuk tuk taxi driver and finally some practice. Every team had completed about 3 hours of practice and then they were confident on the road. After that, we met them in the hotel parking lot where they dropped their vehicles off one by one. All teams their first fuelling experience and all of them felt like celebrities as people were waving and cheering them all the way from the Practice Grounds to the Hotel.
The night ended up in a big initiation bash in Gringos bar, which is close to the base hotel Sun N sand. It was a long night of fun and story exchange.

The Ladies

Day 2
The teams came out of the hotel at around 11.30 am. Team 4, Shitty Shitty Bang Bang where not confident to take up the challenge and they literally wanted to sign off. Aravind spoke to them and they took some lessons in the parking lot of the Sun n Sand Hotel. The rickshaw had some mechanical issues which were attended by our Chennai Garage crew. Further tuning of gears and throttle was done for their satisfaction and they went out with Aravind in the tuk tuk to take the real test. After an hour of driving, they felt much more comfortable and they decided to drive and accept the challenge. The rest of the teams drove the vehicle to Malad (a Mumbai suburb) and took pictures of the team members, their rickshaw and a mall in the background. All of them submitted the picture to the organizers and some of them posted them on the Facebook hub of Mumbai Xpress 2016. Some of the teams were off to do some sightseeing in the evening. The short day came to a fast end after the Chennai Garage team set up everything for the next day flag off.

Day 3

“Road road road” sounds like a classic Rock song to all the Mumbai xpress Participants in the 9 th morning. The plan is to travel through the hectic traffic of Mumbai and reach a small costal town called Alibag. Aravind made briefing for the day and bid them all good bye. The support crew started at 12 am and thus far there was no call. In the morning most the teams had costumes did according to their themes.

Oh, Wow. Photo Credit: Magnus Heinmets

Then all had their music systems on, then many of them making merry dancing and pepped up the flag off with lot of pictures and fun. What seemed like a normal day without many calls ended up with lot of losing way stories and couple of breakdowns which the teams managed themselves without support. All the teams except team 3 reached the hotel before 6 pm. Then the night ended up with beers and food at the base hotel.

We all know that moms are awesome. And we really don’t want to make any distinction between mothers and their levels of awesomeness, but this particular lady really is kick-ass: she started her own chhola kulcha stand in Gurugram to bail her family out of financial problems.
First, we have one thing to clarify: what is “chhola kulcha?” Well, for those of you who haven’t tasted this amazing vegetarian street food dish (yet), we can only give a description about this delicious meal. It is quite easy to make actually, so it’s not a huge surprise that it’s a favoured street food favourite… So, kulcha is flatbread, with the similar texture and taste of naan bread (also YUM,) but here, they use baking powder and baking soda instead of yeast for leavening. Kulcha can be cooked in a clay tandoor, but it is also customary to simply bake it over the stove. The result is a tasty, wonderful piece of heaven that can be munched even on-the-go.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-14251" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/4427926296_e57dcb4854_z.jpg" alt="Street Food is Incredibly Popular in India. Urvashi Yadav, the mother of two decided to embark on her own venture of selling kulcha due to an accident her husband had a couple of months ago. It turns out that he needs hip surgery, and because he was the main breadwinner of the family, the couple and the children started to face financial problems. Although Urvashi worked as a nurse, thus adding to the family’s financials, the money she was bringing in was simply not enough. With her children attending great (but costly) schools, she came to decision to open up her own thela (stand.)

As she told Vagabomb: “My husband’s accident really shook me up. I tried to imagine our family without his income and the future looked grim. That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands. I am good at cooking and I decided to use that skill to my advantage. The more acceptable option, according to our family and the society, would have been to open a restaurant or a catering business. But I didn’t have the funds for that. I was thinking about all of this one day when I was in the market to buy medicines for my husband, and I saw a roadside thela.”
It was then that she sat down to do the maths. After talking to a thela owner nearby, she worked out that her salary would be enough to start her very own chhola kulcha stand next to a market in her neighbourhood. According to Urvashi, the first day was the hardest with the scorching heat and hard work that had to be done, but she quickly became accustomed to it.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-14252" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/9296041271_d949a8e2ba_z.jpg" alt="Kulcha, This Time with Cheese. Her story really blew up when somebody posted on Facebook about her amazing strength and refusal to give up. Since then, customers have been overrunning the stand. Maybe next time you’re in India for the Rickshaw Challenge, you could drop by Gurugram and find the stall next to the Sector 14 market – we hear the kulcha is absolutely scrumptious!

July 29 marks International Tiger Day and India plays an extremely important role in saving these beautiful animals… but first, let us have a look at the facts.

There have been rumblings in the media and among animal activist circles that tigers all over the world face extinction. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that already three subspecies are gone: the Bali tiger, the Caspian tiger and the Javan tiger. More worrying is the fact that in 2010, Myanmar had a wild tiger population of 85, but now it is not even listed among countries that have tigers in the wild.

Aww…! Photo Credit: Kevin Case

Altogether, there are eleven countries in the world that have wild tigers roaming freely, but numbers aren’t all that convincing: Russia has 433; Indonesia has 371; the tiger population in Malaysia is 250, while Nepal’s is 198. Thailand has 189 tigers, Bangladesh has 106 and Bhutan 103 – then, we step out of the three-figured statistics and it all goes downhill. China has seven tigers, Vietnam has five, and Bhutan has only two. Pretty alarming statistics, right?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-14248" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/15518117289_baafd61231_z.jpg" alt="Helping Them Survive is Key. Experts, however, say that the key lies in India. With the largest living population of wild roaming big cats (2,226 of them) it is said that tigers can most successfully survive there. It is only fitting that India should be the “chosen country” to help tigers survive, because the country’s national animal is in fact the Royal Bengal tiger. Other surviving subspecies include Siberian-, Bengal-, Indochinese-, Malayan – and Sumatran tigers.
Wildlife scientist Dr. Yadvendradev Jhala told News18 that the survival of tigers may very well lie in India: “We have the largest global population of tigers, close to about 60 per cent of wild tigers survive in India. The people’s attitude towards conservation is far better in India than anywhere else in the world. We are very tolerant people. The tiger is an icon of our culture, our religion; and it’s the biodiversity umbrella for the conservation of our forest. The government has done a lot to protect it, has declared tiger reserves.”

In fact, you can check these reserves out before/after/while completing the Rickshaw Challenge; there are many sanctuaries scattered across the country. Some of the most beautiful tiger reserves in India include the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve located in Madhya Prades, park that has a rich historic and cultural background, too. With 10th century shrines and hermit caves, amazing temple and a strong, healthy tiger population, this reserve is a must-see for nature lovers. Another equally mesmerizing place is the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, which is open all-year round. You can witness leopards and sloths too here, and there are breath-taking lakes and open waterholes. So, next time you’re in the country, be sure to drop by any of these reserves – you can even volunteer at some of them! Happy Tiger Day!

Things seem to be going extremely well for the Indian airline: not long ago, Air India announced that they would be expanding their number of staff… by a lot.
Good news for everyone who is coming to India for the Rickshaw Challenge or the India’s Cup: soon, Air India will provide tourists with more flight options to choose from and a higher quality service thanks to all the freshly hired cabin crew.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-14239" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/shutterstock_83516281.jpg" alt="Connecting India with the World. Photo Credit: Shutterstock

They are planning on hiring approximately 700 pilots and a whopping 1,500 cabin crew. The question naturally arises: why? Well, it is suspected that the fleet of the airline is going to increase soon, too; the new crew members are needed to keep up with the expansion.

“We are planning to have 700 more pilots in the next two to three years keeping in view the fleet expansion. From last August till now, we have already recruited 250 pilots. So about 500 more pilots we are going to recruit. Advertisement for 400 pilots has already been floated,” said General Manager of Operations, Mr. Sivaramakirshnan to ScoopWhoop.
It is estimated that 150 pilots will complete their training by the end of this year. The target number for cabin crew is in the ballpark of 3,000 – with an existing number of 1,500 cabin crew presently employed by Air India, another 1,500 is needed to reach the goal. Preferably, in the next two to three years.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-14243" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/shutterstock_285347816-1.jpg" alt="Ready to Take Off. Mr. Sivaramakirshnan added that the fleet will also get bigger; they plan on adding at least one hundred new aircrafts in the next four years. Currently, Air India’s fleet is made up of 77 airplanes.
To be able to successfully train the large number of new pilots, the company will acquire some more training simulators (they have a total of seven, three in Hyderabad and four in Mumbai.)
In any case, we cannot wait for even more flights to choose from and have everything taken care of by the increased number of cabin crew while we relax – because the moment we land, it’s going to be all hands on deck on a bumpy ride.

As a part of the $6.2 billion Compensatory Afforestation Fund that was passed in the lower house of the Indian Parliament not long ago, there was a massive, coordinated effort to reforest areas in Uttar Pradesh. It is wonderfully fitting that it should be this state: being the most populated region in India, it is the most prone to destroy forests and cause pollution, so the initiative can be considered highly symbolic. Financing such efforts is also a great way for the government of India to show intent of keeping with the rules of the Paris Climate Agreement to lower levels of pollution (according to Forbes, the top ten most polluted cities include six Indian towns.)
The original plan to reduce pollution and help the environment recover is to reforest 12% of the country to bring forest cover up to 21-33%. As India’s Environmental Minister Prakash Javadekar told Forbes, “Our forest cover will dramatically increase and it will result in achieving our target 33 percent of tree cover and most importantly 2.5 billion tonne of carbon sink as we have indicated in our INDCs.” (INDC stands for Intended Nationally Determined Contribution.)
The green initiative’s plan in Uttar Pradesh may have seemed too grandiose at first, but on Monday, July 11th, almost one million people helped out in accomplishing the goal. In 24 hours, volunteers with a green thumb managed to plant 49.3 million tree saplings all over the state. A staggering 80 types of species were planted and all came from local, Uttar-Pradesh-situated nurseries. Maybe next time you join us on the Rickshaw Challenge or the India’s Cup, you could consider planting a small tree?

Fortunately, the feat to reach a world record was accomplished: the last record holder was Pakistan in 2013, planting almost 850,000 trees in one day. Breaking a world record should definitely spark the spirits of other Indian states, and the government is urging every one of them to start planting trees.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-14232" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/4631899613_a8b375bd53_z.jpg" alt="A Bright Future. Experts in the field, however, have expressed their concern regarding the big-scale planting of tree saplings in such a short time: the first couple of months after the trees have been planted are critical. It is crucial that they get enough water and are protected from diseases, and having so many trees planted may lead to hardship in examining whether their development is going according to plan. So, the state government came up with the strategy to observe these areas with aerial surveillance. Now that’s some real effort put into environmental protection, isn’t it?

Most of us have already heard of this form of healing, but not many of know what it consists of… Well, Ayurveda is an important element that can be put into practice even through our everyday lives. Here is how it works.

What is Ayurveda? “Ayur” means “life” and “veda” means “knowledge,” or “science.”The word literally translates into: “Life- Science” or the science of life.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-14226" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/23043938609_db83abb45f_z.jpg" alt="Life Science. Ayurveda originates in Vedic culture, which comes from India – you’ll find a lot of Ayurveda centers in the country. This is a great thing for our adventurers of the Rickshaw Challenge or the India’s Cup: these complexes’ main aim is to help visitors relax and reflect – and what better way to recharge after a long journey?
The main concept of Ayurveda is to help human beings become healthy and active. As a result, it gives us tips on how to eat, exercise and even behave in our everyday lives. There are also rituals that one can keep per season (like when you’re on a spring detox…) Ayurveda’s main lesson is that we can only be completely healthy if there’s a balance between our body, mind, environment and spirit. Sounds great, doesn’t it?
According to the teachings of Ayurveda, there are three important elements that control what’s inside of us and what surrounds us: Pitta (Fire), Vata (Wind) and Kapha (Earth). Each of these forces has their effect on us – one or two of these elements is dominant in every individual. If Pitta, or Fire is dominant in our nature, we are intelligent, goal-oriented and have a strong will to live our lives. People who are governed mostly by Vata tend to be thinner, more energetic and alterable. If the Kapha element governs our body, we will be easygoing and nurturing, down for everything.
Let’s see what happens when each of the dominant elements in your body functions properly: in the case of Pitta, you’ll be warm and friendly towards others, a great leader and also a great speaker. However, if Pitta is out of balance, it is possible that you’ll develop digestion problems, inflammation, and you’ll feel irritable and compulsive.
When Vata is balanced in your body, you’ll feel that you are creative and energetic and have a gener well-being. The poblem comes when there is too much change in you level of Vata: you’ll feel anxious, irritable, your skin will dry out and you’ll have a complete lack of focus.
For Kapha, the equasion is similar: when it is well-balanced in your body, you’ll find that you feel very stable and supportive, inclined to be pleasant towards others. In the case of a disturbance, however, you’ll quickly gain weight and realize that you have become lazy.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-14227" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/8520569423_65fe69c3d1_z.jpg" alt="Balance is Crucial. To put it simply, Ayurveda works like this: principally, you have to identify which element is strongest in a person and whether it is in balance or not. If imbalance is discovered, the Ayurveda healer will suggest a number of procedures that can include massages, a new diet, herbs, aromatherapy, music or even meditation.

Although recently, the central government published a list on the most pristine cities in the country, this time, there is a new contender for the cleanest city in India: Alappuzha.
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, or the Clean India Mission convenes every year to choose the cleanest and dirtiest cities in India. This year, they gave out a list naming Mysuru (Karnataka,) Chandigarh and Tiruchirapalli (both in Tamil Nadu) as the most pristine cities. Although last year’s survey was done with almost 500 cities, this year, they stuck to a total of 73, in order to avoid unfair comparisons. The ranks were given regarding a number of things, such as solid waste-, septage-, waste water management, the quality of drinking water and the number of fatal incidents due to water-borne illnesses.
The new survey, conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment in Delhi says that in reality, India’s cleanest city is Alappuzha in Kerala, followed by Panaji (in Goa) and Mysuru. The methodology that the CSE used involved nominations from different environmentalists and locals. They pinpointed cities in India that they thought managed garbage disposal well. The CSE then visited the cities to check out the situation for themselves.
So why did they choose these three cities? Well, Alappuzha is a favoured tourist destination because of its attractive natural features, such as canals, amazing backwaters and beaches and lagoons that take your breath away. It is due to these wonders that contesters of the Rickshaw Challenge usually stop here; this city is definitely worth checking out. In the recent years, Alappuzha managed to up its waste segregation to a hundred percent in more than half of the cities’ wards and almost 80% of its households use composting systems and bio-gas as a means of generating power.

Panaji is a charming city – and tourists think so, too. It is due to the vast amount of travellers that waste management became somewhat of a challenge more than ten years ago. In response, the city came up with a program to solve the issue, mostly focusing on Municipal Solid Waste. During this initiative, all bins were disposed of, and waste was collected by a system that sent trash men from door to door. They also came up with a colour-coded waste segregation system which has proven to be highly effective over the years.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-14222" src="https://www.rickshawchallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/8521681358_e8e12e46bc_z.jpg" alt="Charming Little Thing. The problems of the third cleanest city according to the CSE, Mysuru, came with the rise of the population. After realizing that a staggering amount of waste was generated by the increasing numbers of citizens, the municipality quickly laid out a plan to manage waste effectively and in a manner that was environmentally friendly. They too started the conversion to door-to-door collection of waste and came up with an effective way to recycle garbage.
The waste management plans of these cities are an example worth following, especially with the ever-growing population and the fact that, well, tourists cannot get enough of India and just keep travelling there.
