The Malabar Rampage 2019 ended a while ago after a whirlwind of new impressions, parties and new friendships. We’ve talked to Emma from Team Breaking Wind about how the team has experienced their personal Rickshaw Challenge Malabar Rampage 2019.

Why did you decide to sign up for the Rickshaw Challenge Malabar Rampage 2019?

A friend who had been living in Goa mentioned it and it sounded a suitably ridiculous way to introduce myself to India. I’ve always wanted to do a rally and had been thinking of signing up to do The Adventurist’s ‘Mongol Rally’; after doing this however, those grandiose plans are on hold as it isn’t called a Challenge for no reason!

What did you expect and what did you get?

I expected the tuk tuk to be like driving a motorbike and to have plenty of time to meander around the roads enjoying the countryside and the people. Clearly, my rational and irrational mind need to have a chat because the reality was a cantankerous tin can that did not want to get into gear, needed biceps of steel to crank the engine into life and my team mates and I must have been pretty slow and faffy because we never felt we had time to meander and enjoy the countryside; every day was a race to make flag down with some hurried stop offs on the way to at least try and take part in the challenges. I still don’t know why we were so slow!

What was your scariest experience on the road?

Getting caught in the late afternoon rain that led into a storm that led into lightning hitting a tree that fell and blocked the road. This meant one very long traffic jam that meant we were late for flag down and had to drive in the dark with one insipid front light, one tiny little windscreen wiper that tried its best to give a clear view but without street lamps, it was frightening to drive along still with people running across the road dressed in dark clothing, cows still ambling about and the buses that still careered along with no concept of others being on the road too.

What was your most positive experience during the Malabar Rampage?

The people. We had a spectacular first day breakdown that meant standing around in the dark in some back alley (thank you google GPS for that helpful detour). The residents were initially bemused by our arrival, dressed as we were in our ‘Breaking Bad’ yellow jumpsuits but they soon came out with tool kits, phones and offers for us to sit inside their houses with a fan, have a drink and meet their families. Coming from London where even making eye contact on the tube is a faux pas, this was a refreshing change and a lovely one too.

How many breakdowns did you have and what did you learn about fixing a rickshaw?

I think our tuk tuk was broken from day one (and I’m not just saying that to excuse our bad driving) but the clutch was incredibly difficult to use on the first day and we broke down countless times – usually in the middle of a busy junction. Eventually it was a local man who came to our rescue and pointed out our clutch needed fixing. The mechanics from the Rickshaw Challenge were called out and they fixed it and all was well until we came across a festival in Alleppey which meant GPS took us on a weird and wonderful back alley detour that involved paths of sand – which the engine took a dislike to and then conked out. I learned absolutely nothing about fixing a rickshaw except it would appear you can take the odd screw from random parts of it in order to fix certain things…like the clutch. When it comes to the engine having a hissy fit – game over. It’s time to call for help!

Describe India in one word or sentence, which doesn’t include coconut or coconut tree!

Sensory. All five senses enjoy India – whether it is smelling spices in the air (or petrol), seeing the colourful silks and beautiful landscapes, touching the food on your plate (no cutlery in many places), hearing the strains of that glorified lawnmower you’re driving and tasting what is essentially an Indian takeaway twice a day every day.

What is your most “only in India” experience?

We captured a wonderful moment whereby we were coasting along NH66 with the sounds of Kylie and Jason warbling ‘Especially for You’ when we came across a cow walking up ahead. Now, I don’t know whether it was the love song playing at the time or delirium from spending so many hours cooped up in that sweatbox but we all thought the back end of the cow had a certain sensual swagger about it which seemed fitting with the song. Maybe you had to be there. Maybe we should have drunk more water that day.

Do you have any recommendations, any good advice for future participants?

Pack lots of those horrible ‘traveller trousers’ (you know the type all the Gap Yar students wear) and cotton tops. You will SWEAT and then SWEAT SOME MORE. Also, pack gloves as those sweaty hands of yours will struggle to grip the handlebars, patience (maybe xanax?) and ensure you take along team mates whom you love greatly, can be honest with and with whom there are no cracks in your relationship. This is an incredible experience – you will learn a lot about yourself and others, see and do wonderful things but it is challenging (or maybe that was just us) and if you are tired and can’t get the tuk tuk to start on a hill, you need people around you who will stay calm and be supportive – not scream at the gods for giving you the foolish idea that this was a good way to spend a week. Because I didn’t do that. No siree.

Last week we featured some of the best moments from the first half of the Malabar Rampage 2017. The rickshaw challenge is now over, so it’s the perfect time to remember highlights from the event. On their way up the Malabar Coast, through “God’s Own Country” Kerala, Karnataka, to the stunning beaches Goa, teams became expert rickshaw drivers, gave generously to charitable causes, and even made the local news. Here are the highlights of the second half of the Malabar Rampage 2017.

Charity

A big part of any rickshaw challenge is giving back to local communities and this year’s Malabar Rampage was no different. The event raised money for Round Table India’s Freedom Through Education programme, and participants also had a great time visiting schools and getting to know the young students.

Going the Extra Mile

One of the many challenges on this year’s challenge was to take photos with people with impressive moustaches. Many succeeded, but a couple of teams went one step further, and got moustaches themselves. Impressive work.

Beaches

The Malabar Coast is famous for its incredible beaches: here is just a taster of the golden sands that teams visited last week.

Great Sights

Here are two fantastic sights on the Malabar Rampage. First, the giant statue of Shiva at Mudureshwara. Secondly, lots of our rickshaws lined up. Both beautiful in their own way.

The Award Ceremony

Sadly, the Malabar Rampage had to finish sometime. However, the end of a Travel Scientists‘ event means one thing: time for the finishing party. There were three prizes awarded: the Bonkers trophy (for the craziest team), the Charity trophy (for the participants who raised most for charitable causes) and the overall trophy, for the team who, well, deserved it.

The Malabar Rampage Rickshaw Challenge begins on the 8th of April, setting off from Trivandrum, in the very South of India, and teams will travel all the way to Panaji, capital of Goa, 1000km North. It’s sure to be a crazy week, packed with adventure, new experiences, and perfect weather. Participants will race through three states — Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa — each blessed with historic cities and scenic beauty. They all have their own individual charms, though, so let’s take a more detailed look at the states visited on the Malabar Rampage.

Kerala

Kerala is known as “God’s Own Country”, an entirely understandable notion to anyone who has visited this narrow slice of South Indian Coast. Nowhere better exemplifies the peace and tranquility of Southern India, a world away from the mega-cities further north. With almost 600km of coastline, there are beaches of every variety. However, it is slightly inland where you can find Kerala’s true gems. The state’s famous backwaters, centered around Alappuzha (the “Venice of the East“), are a vast network of interlinked canals, lined with palm trees and houseboats.

Further inland you’ll find the glorious Western ghats, a peaceful mountain range covered with green plantations, and home to some of the world’s most vibrant biodiversity. Kerala is not just notable for nature, though. It’s also rich with history, particularly due to its long tradition of trading spices. Many visiting cultures made their mark on this state, and their presence remains. In Kochi, you can still see ancient Chinese fishing nets, pictured above, and meet the oldest Jewish community in India.

Karnataka

Of the three states visited on the Malabar Rampage, Karnataka is by far the largest. On this rickshaw challenge we stay by the coast, but the state extends hundreds of kilometers inland, covering much of Southern India. Within its vast area, you’ll find the ancient ruins of Hampi, once the second largest city on earth, and Mysuru (known as Mysore), with its glorious palaces and rich history. Karnataka is also a paradise for nature lovers: its rolling hills are covered in fertile soil, while its jungles and national parks are filled with exotic animals.

The cities of Karnataka showcase a mixture of modern and traditional. Mangalore and Bangalore are thriving hubs of industry and business, progressive and cosmopolitan, where you can find fast-paced living and contemporary fine dining. However, the state’s ancient ruins and religious monuments maintain a link to the past. It’s impossible not to be wowed by the gigantic statue of Shiva at Murudeshwara, viewed from the adjoining temple’s towering gopuram, to which pilgrims flock.

Goa

Despite being the smallest of the states visited on the Malabar Rampage, the Union territory of Goa has everything. Its famously pristine beaches cover virtually every inch of the state’s coastline: from hidden coves to packed resorts, there’s a spot of golden sand for everyone, from hippies to 5-star-hotel lovers, whether you want an all-night party or a long day’s tan. However, there’s much more to Goa than seaside paradise. For a start, the cuisine rivals that of any state in India: Hindu, Islamic, and Portuguese influences combine to create all sorts of exotic dishes, featuring fiery spices and freshly-caught seafood.

The Portuguese also left Goa with unique and atmospheric historic heritage. The old quarter of the capital Panaji, with cobbled streets and coloured buildings, is like nowhere else on the sub-continent. Baroque architecture and imposing white churches are an vivid reminder of colonial times. If you ever tire of beaches and historic buildings, head inland to Goa’s lush countryside.

First compared to the famous city of canals over a century ago, Kerala’s Venice of the East is still worth a visit today.

In the early 20th Century, the governor-general and viceroy of India George Nathaniel Curzon dubbed Alappuzha, at that point known as Alleppey, the “Venice of the East”, remarking that “Here nature has spent up on the land her richest bounties.” Generous praise, but does it still ring true? Let’s consider the similarities and differences of the two canal-strewn cities. And perhaps if Alppuzha isn’t really Kerala’s Venice of the East might it be… better?

Similarity #1: Canals (Obviously)

Photo’s by Vimaljoseph93

It won’t come as a surprise that Curzon’s comparison with Venice was prompted by Alappuzha having many canals, which connect the city to the wonderful Kerala backwaters. There’s no denying both cities are well served by narrow waterways, but they aren’t exactly similar in form. The canals of Venice weave through tightly-packed lanes of grand houses, are crossed by impressive stone bridges, and populated by bombastic gondaliers standing on their unique narrow canoe-like rowing boats. The canals of Kerala are considerably more relaxed, lined with trees and traversed by their famous houseboats. Though it doesn’t have Alappuzha’s natural charm, Suzhou in Eastern China is a far closer aesthetic match to Venice…

Similarity #2: Busy Busy Busy

Okay, canals aren’t the only the similarity which might prompt one to describe Alappuzha as Kerala’s Venice of the East. Both cities are very busy, especially in the center. Venice has long had a reputation for an its crush of tourists in popular sights like St Marks Square, so much so that the city may soon charge for access to prime locations. Alappuzha is not quite at that level, but its city centre does bustle with chaotic activity, like few places in the state of Kerala.

Similarity #3: Religious Sites

One final similarity between the real Venice and Kerala’s Venice of the East is an abundance of religious sites. Venice is, of course, famous for its stunning churches, from the grand Saint Mark’s Basilica to many smaller chapels dotted around the lagoon. Similarly, the temples of Alappuzha are highly recommended. Unlike much of Kerala, where non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the premises of temples, anyone is welcome of many of the most interesting of Alappuzha’s places of worship and even festivals.

Difference #1: Well, They are Very Different (Obviously)

Enough of the similarities. Despite the canals, Venice and Alappuzha are incredible different. While, like Venice, Kerala has been at the heart of global trading routes for centuries, the delicious spicy cuisine of the state may come as a pleasant surprise… unlike pizza and pasta. Another benefit of Kerala’s Venice of the East is the weather: while Northern Italy is quite chilly for much of the year, Alappuzha remains consistently warm all year; just avoid the seasonal monsoons! But that’s not the biggest difference…

Difference #2: In Alappuzha You Can Actually Relax

While the jewel of the Adriatic is one of the most visit sites in the world, Alapuzzha is far more of an undiscovered gem. The crush of tourists can make Venice almost impossible to enjoy, although the commotion on the canals can be fun for a while. However, just a short trip out of Alappuzha’s centre and you can reach a mesmerising paradise and floating towards Kerala’s backwaters is like descending into a dream of peaceful beauty. This is India at its best, and while it’s not Venice, it’s wonderful in its own right.

Don’t take our word for it though, you should see Kerala’s “Venice of the East” for yourself! The best way to visit Alappuzha is to join the Malabar Rampage 2017 rickshaw adventure. The minimal assistance rally travels from Trivandrum to Panaji, in a week of discovery, laughs, and over 1000km! You’ll explore the incredible food, scenery, and culture, that make South India so special.

A tuk tuk challenge, organised with the help of the Travel Scientists, is taking place this week in Southern India, raising funds for Food For Life Vrindavan.

With the support of Bollywood star Vivek Oberoi, the brand ambassador of Food for Life Vrindavan, the rally was launched at an official press conference in Mumbai last Saturday. Though not participating in the rally himself, Oberoi spoke about the importance of charitable work. He was among several of the participants of the rally, including Rupa Raghunath Das, the founder of FFLV. His charity aims to empower girls living in the rural Uttar Pradesh region: money raised goes toward ending child marriage, preventing child prostitution, and helping girls get an education.

The Participants

FFLV founder Rupa Raghunath Das gives some locals a ride!

In addition to Rupa Raghunath Das, the charity rally has impressive field of varied backgrounds, all eager to help the charity and to explore the Malabar Coast! Participants include British actor Ravin Ganatra, Indian actress Aarti Khetarpal and renowned hairdresser David Jameli. Irish filmmaker Ravinol Chambers is taking part in the rally while at the same time filming a documentary about the event, and the plight of girls in India.

The route

Though a challenging distance, the rally travels down the beautiful and varied Malabar Coast, which also features on the Malabar Rampage and Mumbai Xpress Rickshaw Challenges. The route passes the famous beaches of Goa and through Kerala, with its delicious cuisine, as the event heads towards its final destination of Kanyakumari in Southern Tamilnadu. It’s not just a race: along the way participants are required to carry out weird and wonderful challenges.

If the FFLV tuk tuk challenge has inspired you, why not participate in a Rickshaw Challenge yourself. On the Malabar Rampage and Mumbai Xpress you’ll see the same incredible Malabar Coast. However, if you can’t wait till next year, the Classic Run, a ten-day rickshaw adventure from Chennai to Trivandrum, is scheduled for December 28th. You’ll race 1000km through magical Tamilnadu, ending up in the deep South of India. Alternatively, if you want to organise a private event yourself, the Travel Scientists are always available to help!

Kerala, in Southern India, is known as “God’s own country” for its glorious beaches and luscious backwaters, but the food is also heavenly. Check out the top dishes to try in Kerala.

There are plenty reasons to visit Kerala, ranging from the pure relaxation possible on the Malabar Coast’s golden beaches to the adventure-fueled madness of a rickshaw challenge adventure rally. However, there may be no better reason than to enjoy the incredible food, of which the top dishes to try in Kerala are just part.

The beauty of Kerala’s cuisine is that — like the region itself — it’s so diverse, with plenty for vegetarians, or lovers of meat and seafood, to enjoy. Expect a lot of coconut, rice, and the flavourful seasoning you would expect from an area known for millennia as the “land of spices”. The region is filled with mouthwatering dishes, far too many to list, and of course there are also many specialties of South India generally that are available there. Here, though, is the first part of our selection of meals that make a trip to Kerala such a culinary treat:

Puttu with Kadala Curry

Let’s start with breakfast. While masala dosa is very popular in Kerala, it originates in Karnataka so doesn’t make the list. Puttu, though, is a local dish beloved all over the state. It’s delicious, healthy, and simple: it’s a combination of just steamed rice, grated coconut, water and some spice, often cumin. It’s often accompanied by Kadala curry, a thick coconut gravy with spiced black chickpeas. The perfect way to start the day.

Idiyappam with Egg Roast

Idiyappam is a classic breakfast, so it works just as well at dinner. Sometimes known as string hoppers, it consists of steam rice noodles. Along the Malabar coast you’ll find it mixed with sweetened coconut milk. Because of its simplicity idiyappam can be eaten with pretty much any curry, but a classic addition is egg roast. Roasting eggs in think masala gravy is a Kerala classic in its own right, and matches perfectly with this and other dishes.

Appam with Stew

Egg Roast is also regularly eaten with appam, a delicious rice pancake that is spongy in the centre and delicately thin around the edges. The beloved dish is an easy selection as one of the top dishes to try in Kerala, delighting locals and tourists alike with its unique texture. It’s most popularly served with stew, commonly chicken soaked in a spicy coconut gravy, though any will do so long as it includes coconut milk!

Sadhya

Sadhya is a way of eating that is at the very heart of food culture in Kerala, when people come together for a feast. A variety of foods are placed on a large banana leaf, while the invited sit cross-legged and eat without cutlery, using only their right hand. There can easily be thirty or more different dishes, mostly vegetarian, with separate courses from starter to dessert. The centerpiece is usually boiled rice, along with a wide variety of curries and side dishes. This is not only one of the top dishes to try in Kerala, attending Sadhya is one of the must-try experiences in Southern India.

The options for a hungry traveler in Kerala are tantalising, and there’s even more to come in Part Two. If these dishes (not to mention the golden sands and gorgeous backwaters) tempt you to visit Kerala, there’s no better way to experience the region that by participating in a Rickshaw Challenge. The Malabar Rampage sets off from Trivandrum, travels up the Malabar coast through Kerala, and finishes in Goa. Your week on a tuk tuk will be full of crazy experiences and stunning beauty, and you’ll have plenty chances to enjoy some of the finest food India has to offer!

Day 5:
With a distance of 260km from Calicut to Mangalore, a tiring day lay ahead of our participants, but the reward was something they all coveted: on Wednesday, they would finally leave Kerala and enter the state of Karnataka, where it wouldn’t be as difficult to find a cold beer after a hard day on the road.

En-Route

So, the time finally came to start the Malabar Rampage 2016 party. On the way to the location, our teams had the rare opportunity of being driven in a rickshaw instead of driving one themselves, which was a welcome change for everyone, as they could finally kick back en-route. Our participants feasted and chatted in the warm breeze of the night until late evening. Before that, however, they had to find their way to Mangalore and complete some challenges – they also had the opportunity to check out some amazing sights.

Team Blues Brothers Giving a Ride to Locals

Team Blues brothers fulfilled the challenges with flying colours – they snapped a picture of a team member with a holy man and gave some confused locals a ride in their rickshaw.

Blues Brothers and a Holy Man

The teams had the chance to relive history; they visited Kappad Beach. This is the place where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498, which, as first step in direction of the later colonialization of India, established a permanent sea route from Europe to India. Also a visit to Bekal Fort was possible, a huge fort build by Indians, surrounded by thousands of coconut trees, next to a kilometer long beach.

Bekal Fort

Day 6
This day was going to be a short and easy one, driving just 150km from Mangalore to Murudeshwar on nice broad roads that even had a partitioning stripe in the middle… this small detail can make all the difference when driving on Indian roads. Today’s highlight was Udupi, a quiet little town, famous for its Sri Krishna temple, established back in 13th century. The pit stop in this town was an excellent opportunity for our participants to get some insight into the colourful and devotional religious life of Hindus. Everyone admired the women, who dressed up in their breath-taking saris to visit the temple. Petting and feeding one of the holy cows roaming freely in front of the temple was an absolute must.

Teams Badmaash 1 & 2 Being Rescued

Also it is time for some big thanks to our support team, which is always there when our participants need them, like Teams Badmaash 1 and 2 can tell you. They broke down twice today, and both times our technical miracle workers from Chennai Garage showed up at the scene without even been called, solved the problem within minutes and sent the teams back on the road.

Murudeshwar Temple

The highlight of the day was for sure arriving in Murudeshwar and driving up to the hotel, with the world’s tallest statue of Lord Shiva suddenly showing up on a hill and looking just spectacular in the late afternoon light. The hotel was located directly at the beach, which made for some unforgettable sunset views.

Sunset in Murudeshwar

Today, our teams were flagged off from the Government School at Mallikatte, starting the route from Mangalore to Murudeshwar. Before embarking on their journey, however, our 38 participants had the opportunity to make new friends and share stories with the youngsters studying at the school.

Say Cheese for the Class Photo!

It was wonderful to see how the kids lit up when they saw the colourful rickshaws pull into the courtyard – the participants also brought along some gifts with them, like pens, pencils and watercolour paint palettes. The children also got to drive around in the vehicles and have some fun with the teams; everyone had a great time.

Let’s Have a Bit of Rickshaw Fun!

The Rickshaw Challenge has been actively a part of supporting the charity Round Table of India in completing their mission – with each run, we wish to contribute to the organization’s goals.

They See Us Rollin’…

Our teams play a significant role in raising funds with the Round Table of India under their program: “Freedom Through Education.” Our 38 participants also contribute to the futures of the young students by inspiring them to go beyond their country’s borders and learn everything they can about the world. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved, and after the visit, our rickshaw gurus continued on the road energized and as positive as ever.

The second day on the streets of Southern India has passed for our brave adventurers. By now, the teams are one with their rickshaws and know all their little flaws and knacks. This was especially important for Team Flying Birds, who had a hard time learning on Day 1 and they ran out of gas three times during the run. Finally, however, they built up a great set of skills and acquired a whole lot of knowledge about the limits of their rickshaw.

Goan Places in Kochi

Our participants had to cover 235 kilometers from Alleppey to Calicut. Although this may seem like a comfy two-hour ride, in India, it is easy to run into a day full of crazy surprises, adventure and unpredictable traffic.

Heavy Traffic Indeed.

First stop was the city of Kochi, famous for the use of Chinese fisher nets, spices and the Jewish quarter. The Jews of Kochi are said to have arrived in Kerala already in 70 CE after the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, establishing a strong Jewish community.

Spice Boys and the Happy Ladies.

The first challenge of the day was all about diving into the smell and the taste of Kerala and getting to know at least five spices typical of the Southern Indian cuisine. Team Butt, Sweat and Ears added a little extra touch and made some ladies in the spice shop very happy with their handsome appearance – and thankfully, they managed to capture the special moment. The team also had enough time to get their rickshaw pimped a little more and have a relaxed cricket match with the locals while waiting. It seems they have perfectly adapted to the laid back, unrushed Indian way of living already!

The Autowale Completing Their Challenge

Task 2 was easy enough: taking a picture of the Kerala Backwaters with a team member and a Rickshaw on it. The task was also the perfect excuse to take a photo, which, if used wisely, would guarantee some jealous friends and family members back home. The last teams arrived late into the night, but we can’t account for any losses yet and there are still 21 of them.

Chinese Fishing Nets

After the sign up in the morning, Aravind Bremanandam, Chief Scientist of The Travel Scientists, did the best to prepare the brave adventurers for the craziness of India. Mr. Bremananadam’s wise words “the British couldn’t change us in 200 years, don’t try to do it in 5 days. Just relax”, might be the best advice for the racers facing the madness of Indian roads.
In the afternoon they meet their travel companions and second homes on the road for the next week for the first time. The teams familiarized themselves with their rickshaws and discovered – after approaching carefully – the full power of the gas pedal, taking the speeding possibilities of the practicing ground to the maximum.
The first real challenge of the day was a short driving test under the hot tropical sun for all team members before being released onto Indian streets by themselves for the first time. Not all passed with flying colors, but no team was rated a too high danger for the traffic in the end. Also surprisingly all teams returned unharmed from their first independent drive in the real traffic of India. The price for the first crash and the first dent in their rickshaws though goes to the Blues Brothers – luckily nobody was injured or seriously traumatized, except the rickshaw.

Unharmed.

Back in the hotel, the participants were released into the night, which proves to be a special challenge in Kerala, a state which has done its best to ban alcohol. Only some interaction with locals can help to find the hidden places, where you can still have a cool beer running down your throat.
The next day brought the first real challenge for the participants. To warm up with the game they had to find their way to the train station and get a platform ticket, as well as taking a picture of the rickshaw and the team in front of Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple. The rest of the day was leisurely spent with sightseeing, at the beach or just enjoying the hotel’s roof terrace and pool.
On Monday life will get a tiny bit more difficult for the teams, since it is time for the Malabar Rampage’s first stage from Trivandrum to Alleppey, journeying into the rural India, visiting one of India’s best beaches and fulfilling challenging task along the way.
