We are halfway through the Rickshaw Challenge Mumbai Xpress 2017 and as always, Princely is here to tell us all about the events during our exciting rickshaw adventure! If you have missed the exciting first days, you can check them out here, here and here!

Day 6

It’s again an overcast morning and it drizzling every now and then. Teams started dropping their bags at 7.30 am and took their Breakfast in the base hotel
Warned after the briefing, the teams were prepared to take the longest and toughest drive during the Mumbai Xpress: more than 230 km to the coastal town of Rathnagiri. Once they had crossed Mahabaleshwar the early morning fog slowed all the vehicles down to below 15 km/h speed. Hazzard light and head lights were glowing on all the vehicles plying on the road.

A bit of fog ain’t gonna stop nobody!

I started immediately, along with all the teams and stopped for breakfast. Then I met Team 3 Just in Time and Team 10 Swole Team 6 at a waterfall. It’s a stunning view and teams were praising Maharastra for its scenic appearance and beautiful mountains. After that it is a pretty straight forward drive and I met all the teams on the way. Team 14 were talking to a police man and they were seems to be in up mood as they were finishing the challenge of the day.

Chivalry is not dead!

When I stopped for lunch I could see some more teams going past us. Team 2 3 Amigos was leading the pack to the destination. I did not get any service call throughout the day. But after teams started checking in I heard that Team 8 Mayo4Sam had a small issue and they quickly set that right by a local mechanic.

Giving some scared locals a ride

All the teams were just on time except Team 7 Not Fast, Not Furious and team 12 Rickshaw Lady. Team 12, the lone traveler from Australia, lost her way and to find it back it took her time. Even though she lost time, she found a companion in Team 7 and they drove to the destination together. It was almost 8 pm when they arrived at the base hotel.
Then it is all beer and stories. As the hotel had no bar, the teams made arrangements by driving into town to get beers well before 6pm. I think by now they all got along well and everybody understands the other’s need. It’s a superb team building event.

Day 7 & 8

It is a bright start from Rathnagiri. I met all the teams on the way and waved passing them. The Goan state roads are such a reliefing sight compared to the battered Maharastrian roads. I reached the hotel around 4.30 p.m. One by one all the teams checked in the hotel after 5 pm. As the challenge was given in the old Goa, most of them visited the place and came back. The hotel was nice and all were relaxing and got ready for the rest day.

Taking the “Cow Picture Challenge” to a new level

Goan night is a party night. Team 7 Vollette Kels had birthday the next day and it was party in Baga where she got her birthday bash.
On the 8 th day teams rested thoroughly and some of them had their own agenda on visiting places and trying new food style. When I went to the hotel that day for a brief time, they showed me how they had partied the previous night. What happens in Goa stays in Goa. Team 10 Swole Team 6, who had a team member left from the start due to visa issue, decided to discontinue from the challenge and they announced it to me. Bye Bye Peter and Sebastian, amazing guys who missed their friend Bryan badly. Hope we shall see you in another challenge. It’s Bye from me form Goa.
Great piece in the Financial Review listing the Rickshaw Challenge has one of the top 10 thrill-seeking adventures.

“India is one of Asia’s most popular tourist destinations, but there’s a novel way to see the country that will never make a tourist brochure. Compete in a 1000-kilometre rickshaw journey down India’s southern coast (three-wheeled auto-rickshaws, or tuk-tuks, are India’s most iconic transportation) from Chennai to Trivandrum, the southern tip of the subcontinent. You’ll have 10 days to find your way to the finishing point – through crowded city streets, travelling during monsoonal rain storms aboard a canvas-topped, three-wheeler that can’t go beyond 60km/h. Proceeds of the event go to charity.”

Get your rickshaws ready, because our next rally is coming up in just over a month!
From Bollywood to Kollywood, the Chennai Xpress will race you from Mumbai to Chennai, crossing an epic 1300km across Southern India through the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Kicking off in Mumbai, one of India’s craziest cities that comes complete with its own identity crisis, but a fun one at that. Mixing the glamour of Bollywood with the grit of Slumdog Millionaire, Mumbai is a city of extremes, embracing both mayhem and order at the same time, mixing up bazaars with colonial monuments and towering skyscrapers.
From Mumbai, our fuel-efficient lawnmower on three-wheels will rocket off at a speed of 35 miles per hour to Pune. Even though Pune is said to represent “New India”, since the city is an industrial, business and academic hub today, it’s over 1000 years old.
On day three, the rickshaws have to navigate the roads and the chaos of India’s traffic to Hubli, one of India’s fastest growing cities and a transport hub for Mumbai an then onto Tumkur. While Tumkur might not be India’s most beautiful site, you’ll get to have some fun on the rickshaw getting there. The surrounding region will give your rocket rickshaw some challenges, since you’ll drive over hills and valleys on the way.
Before finishing up in Chennai, we’ll head off to one of the highlights of the trip on day six. Vellore is city that’s certainly got a diverse range of previous rulers, from the Pavallas to the Medieval Cholas, and the British, this historic city has plenty to offer the inner tourist in you.
Finishing up in Chennai, you can finally put your rickshaw away, if you haven’t broken down on the way that is, and explore India’s fourth city.
If riding a rickshaw for 1300km has been a tiring experience, then drop down to Marina Beach, the second longest beach in the world, or check out the temples and sites or simply just get out and explore Chennai’s vibrant culture.
The Chennai Xpress isn’t just about the city stop offs though, in fact, one of the best things about riding a rickshaw through India is exploring the countryside.
Your rickshaw will trudge across beaches, cut through hills and valleys, all with incredible exotic backdrops to take home with your experience.
Oh yeah, and most importantly, you’ll get to hang out with some other crazy nutters brave enough to race off across India on an auto rickshaw, and you can be sure there will be a bad road with a party on the end of it.
So if you’re hankering for an Indian adventure, sign up for the Chennai Xpress and join us for the ride!

The great Hit The Road: India film is making lots of noise, and the latest is a cool piece in BACKPACK ME
“This is no Bollywood. This is no ordinary documentary, even. Hit The Road India, is a a feature travel adventure documentary. It follows the adventure of 2 friends from North America, Richard and Keith, who take part in a rickshaw rally across India during 12 days. The Mumbai Xpress starts in Mumbai and ends up in Chennai. You can imagine that, for both the team in the rally and those shooting the documentary, this was a trip full of adventure.. even more adventure than the “regular” dose one gets to experience by default when touring Incredible India. And that is saying a lot!
Hit The Road is, in theory, a documentary about the Mumbai Xpress race and the particular team featured in this case. But ultimately, it’s about more than that: it’s about observing, from an outsider’s perspective, how life rolls in India. But do not expect an “Incredible India” type of commercial here. This is a documentary that doesn’t necessarily show you the most colorful or pretty side of India, but it does give you an insight on the real deal of smaller cities, away from landmarks and popular monuments.”
‘Here we are on the last day of our epic journey. It might have only been 8 days of driving, but it was a mighty effort by all in the Double Chinnais team. Janelle and Toni have shown they both have the potential for a bit of road rage. They were our principal drivers and managed to get us through the crowded city streets. Not only were they dodging cars, trucks, busses, bicycles, bullock carts, tractors, pedestrians but also cows, pigs dogs, goats and chickens. They did a collosal job of keeping us alive but also on time. Yep both are speed demons. And both can lay claim to threading an auto rickshaw through a needle eye gap between two busses. You need nerves of steel to drive on Indian roads and they have what it takes. All had turns at driving but they did the tough stuff.
All in all it’s been a really fun challenge and one we can talk about for years. A fantastic team of strong girls with adventure running in their veins. WE DID IT!
