International students create next-gen electric rickshaw. A revolutionary two-wheeler concept from TUM CREATE, codenamed VOI, is poised to change urban mobility. In Vietnamese, “voi” literally translates to “elephant”, and is a symbol of a safe and intelligent way of transport.
The VOI is not just limited to transporting passengers. Its modular front pod can be swapped for a cargo box or even a mobile kitchen – making it a truly multipurpose vehicle.
The plan is to test the fuel’s efficacy to eventually power an entire elephant pavalion.
‘The zoo happens to have a lot of animal dung on hand where it is, and via its own patent-pending gasification tech it is doing what it can, introducing a poo-powered rickshaw that turns animal waste and human trash into mobility.
The rickshaw was purchased from Thailand and modified to run on gasified pellets created by the zoo’s own technology. Those pellets, composed of animal waste and garbage generated by human visitors and zoo staff, aren’t just powering the rickshaw, but will be used to generate power at the zoo’s upcoming 10-acre elephant exhibit.’
Powered by a lithium-ion battery, the Meguru has a maximum speed of about 25 miles per hour.

“This is a true environmentally friendly car. Instead of an air-conditioner, it comes with a pinwheel, and we are also thinking of adding a wind chime because it gives a refreshing sound to cool you down without the need of electricity. It doesn’t have a heater, but it’s equipped with blankets to keep you warm in the winter.” Yodogawa Group CEO Nobuyuki Ogura told Reuters.

Japanese elements were integrated to the rickshaw design, such as the red lacquer body, recycled bamboo floors and a washi paper window, all created by Japanese craftsmen. Price tag: one million yen or $12K.
