‘IndiaCommutes (InCom) is focussed on solving commute related issues in urban India by using community & location intelligence. Currently doing a pilot in Pune, InCom is offerering Dial-a-Rickshaw service over the phone. In the future same service will be extended over Web and SMS.’

Three Wheels United have taken on the challenge to improve the lives of the millions of rickshaw drivers that ply the roads of India and other countries. In close co-creation with the auto rickshaw driver communities, TWU developed a profitable business model that will improve the living standard of rickshaw drivers and their families.

The model is based on 3 components:
• Fair loans so that rickshaw drivers can buy their own vehicle
• Additional streams of income, such as advertising
• Clean technology that lowers fuel cost and is less harmful for the environment

Ramu and Goldy are two babies separated at a tattoo parlor in India under tragic circumstances. 30 years later, Ramu, now an auto rickshaw driver and Goldy, an ambulance driver meet at a traffic light.

The idea for this film by Arjun Gupte came form his encounters with auto rickshaw drivers in Bangalore and Chennai.

‘They are some of the most colorful characters around and stories about their exploits are legendary as they break almost every rule and cause mayhem on the roads. I come from India and it was important for me to get a unique look and feel that represented what my country was all about, a mish-mash of colors, shapes, people and animals all living together.’

Super Auto Rickshaw Driver

Delhi may be considered unsafe for women, but that hasn’t stopped Sunita from taking up as odd a job as an autorickshaw driver.

Thirty two-year-old Sunita, the national capital’s first female driver, transcends all barriers, living and playing by the rules in a profession dominated by men.

“I drive an auto because I enjoy it. People should do what they enjoy,” she said.

Uniforms: Auto drivers get 1 month more

The autorickshaw drivers in the city got another month’s time to get their uniforms ready, which were made mandatory by the traffic police and the regional transport authority (RTA). However, wearing of badges is compulsory for every auto driver from December 1.
This decision was announced by the traffic department of the city police on Saturday after a meeting with the officials of autorickshaw federations.

An autorickshaw driver who gives free rides to the blind, donates money to an old age home and is trying to raise funds for the treatment of a sandwich vendor.
Sandeep Bachhe is an autorickshaw driver in Mumbai. More of him later, but first let me take you through his wonder autorickshaw. It has a television set tuned to good old Doordarshan — which incidentally is celebrating 50 years of transmission in India. Then there is also a board with the day’s price of gold, silver, dollar, pound and the yen.
Behind the driver’s seat hangs another chart with phone numbers of hospitals, theatres, hotels and airlines. You can also pick up the day’s papers and a couple of magazines in the rack behind him. ‘Do not spit,’ another notice admonishes you. There are pictures of Gods from all major religions. “All are welcome,” he says with a smile.
“I have been driving an autorickshaw for ten years. Whatever money I make I first give my family. The little that can spare, I give it to an old age home. During the beginning of the academic year for schools, we try and distribute notebooks to needy students.”
