Tirunelveli

The city of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu is located 700 kilometers south-west from the state capital Chennai. It is the administrative centre for the Tirunelveli district and is located on the banks of the river Thamiraparani.

Tirunelveli is an ancient settlement dating back 2000 years that has been ruled by the various kingdoms, sultinates and empires, including the British, and once even held the role of being the capital of the Pandya Kingdom. Because the city is a historical melting pot, you’ll find a number of interesting sites dotted around the Tirunelveli, the most notable being the Nellaiappar Temple.

Today, the city flourishes with industries, from administrative services and agriculture through to banking. It is also a major player in the wind-power generation sector, where most of Tamil Nadu’s wind-power generation units are located around Tirunelveli.

One of the city’s most famous gastronomic dishes is halwa, a sweet that’s made from wheat, sugar and ghee, making it Tamil Nadu’s sweet-making parent, since the art of sweets spread of other parts of the state after the Lakshmi Vilas Stores opened in the city in the mid 19th century.

Sightseeing

Knthimathi- Nellaiyapper Temple – Located at the heart of the city, this impressive and ancient temple is dedicated to the god Shiva and his consort Parvathi. The main attractions of this Dravidian temple are the Golden Lily Tank, Musical Pillars and the Hall of a Thousand Pillars.
