Poovar

Poovar is a small coastal hamlet that falls within the Trivandrum district of Kerala. Located as it is at the southern most tip of Trivandrum, it is easily accessible from Tamil Nadu as well as Kerala. In fact, Trivandrum International Airport is a mere 20 kms away.

In ancient times, Poovar was a major trading center. Its merchants traded in timber, sandlewood, ivory and spices. Legend has it that the trading ships of King Solomon landed in a port called 'Ophir'. It is widely believed that Ophir was none other than Poovar!

Today, Poovar village is famed for its beautiful beach and attracts hordes of tourists from all over. It is the place to laze around, soak in the sun, sand, sea and tuck into delicious fare.

It also has an estuary that meets the sea and provides a lovely view during high tides. 56 kms from Poovar, the Neyyar river joins the Arabian Sea. It is this natural beauty that makes Poovar an ideal tourist spot.

There’s a lot of see in and around Poovar:
The Central Mosque here is believed to been built by Malik ibn Dinar and his missionary team is an art lover’s delight. It is more than 1,400 years ago and is a must-see.

You can also go in for the houseboat cruises on Paruthiyur backwaters to wtiness magnificent sunrises and sunsets. The boatmen are experienced hands at picking out coconut lined picnic spots for you! Tour packages abound for the interested!

You can also savour the Ayurvedic experience at Poovar. You can choose from medicated steam baths to herbal oil baths. Just right for the body and soul.
