Bhatkal

Bhatkal is a port town in Karnataka. Located in the midst of Western Ghats with the Arabian Sea fringing it, this picturesque town provides boasts of several medieval monuments and archeological treasures.

  Bhatkal still carries vestiges of its illustrious past. As a seaport of great importance, it witnessed the rise and fall of several dynasties including the Hoyasala, the Vijayanagara empire, the Saluvas. The Cholas wrested control of the town in the 10th century. The Portuguese made an appearance around the 16th century and spread their influence all around. In fact, Bhatkal has been referred to by its Portuguse name ‘Batecala’ in many historic texts. It was also ruled by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan after which it went to the British.

Today, Bhatkal is a prominent educational centre. There are numerous educational institutions managed by Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen, a pioneering education trust founded in 1919. The Bhatkal Education Trust also runs a few institutions. Another reputed institution is Jamia Islamia Centre which imparts religious education.

The best time to visit Bhatkal is during August to March as the weather is pleasant. Remember to savour the spicy fish curry of the town!

Bhatkal Beach - If you happen to love water sports, Bhatkal Beach is the place for you. There are boating facilities and it is safe to swim here. What’s more, there is a coaching centre too. The sunrises and sunsets are legendary and attract scores of tourists from all over the world. The old lighthouse on a small offers a breathtaking view of the sea.

Chandranath Basadi Temple – This temple dates back to the Vijaynagar Empire. It has many intricate classical carvings in Vijayanagar style. This ancient beauty has withstood the ravages of time and is must see for archaeology buffs!

Jamia Masjid, Sultani Masjid, Noor Masjid and Khalifa Masjid – These mosques date back a couple of centuries. Their classical architecture makes them worth a visit.
