Bhatkal

Bhatkal is a port town in Karnataka. Located in the midst of Western Ghats with the Arabian Sea fringing it, this picturesque town provides boasts of several medieval monuments and archeological treasures.

Bhatkal still carries vestiges of its illustrious past. As a seaport of great importance, it witnessed the rise and fall of several dynasties including the Hoyasala, the Vijayanagara empire, the Saluvas. The Cholas wrested control of the town in the 10th century. The Portuguese made an appearance around the 16th century and spread their influence all around. Today, Bhatkal is a prominent educational centre. There are numerous educational institutions managed by Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen, a pioneering education trust founded in 1919.
