Baripada

Baripada, situated in the heart of the tribal lands, is a vibrant town in Orissa.

It is an important centre for trade in sugarcane, rice and timber. It is known as ‘Shoppers’ Paradise’ and is renowned for its textile heritage. Baripada is the ideal base to tour the Mayurbhanj region. Its lush valleys, dense forests, wildlife parks, and ancient temples make it a tourist hub.

Baripada is home to the world famous Mayurbhanj Chhau dance, an ancient Hindu dance form. On your trip here, remember to pick up handloom products as souvenirs!

Tourist Attractions
Jagannath temple – This is one of Baripada’s biggest attractions. The Chariot Festival (Rathyartra) is celebrated by the locals on a grand scale. Another unique feature of this festival is that the chariot of Subhadra, the female deity, is pulled by females only. This is a century old tradition and makes for a wonderful sight!

Haripur – Located 16 kms away from Baripada, this place has the ruins of palaces and temples built by the rulers of the Bhanja dynasty. Though in ruins, the Rasikaraya temple and the Durbar Hall are still a majestic sight.

Khiching - Located 150 kms away, this is a town of historic importance. It has many ancient temples, some of which see worship till this day. The temple of Kichakeswari, the town’s deity is built entirely of chlorite slabs, the only one of its kinds in India. You can visit the small museum in town that has a lovely collection of sculpture and art.

Simlipal National Park – This is one of India’s premier wildlife parks. Spread over 2,750 sq. kms it was made a Tiger Reserve and given the responsibility of conserving India’s fast depleting tiger population. Simlipal has over 95 tigers as well as leopards, elephants, mugger crocodiles and over 230 species of birds.
